eLearning in Second Life

Writing this article was incredibly fascinating, but I can’t say that I’ve been completely sold on the idea of Second Life. Still, plenty of people have, and they explain why in this piece.

Communication through cartoon characters. Real-life experiences simulated in a virtual world. Forget the notion that eLearning is antisocial. Online students can now socialize in a 3-D environment – without ever meeting in real life.

For distance learners who lament the opportunity to be more social with their fellow students, the virtual environment of Second Life is revolutionizing the getting-to-know-you experience. A 3-D virtual world entirely built and owned by its five million residents, Second Life is the brainchild of San Francisco-based Linden Labs and runs on software that is downloaded from the Second Life website. Many colleges on the cutting-edge of technology are using the simulation experience to enhance experiential learning, allowing students to practice new skills and ideas and learn from their mistakes as preparation for real-world experiences. For instance, a law course’s Second Life component may have students making their arguments in front of their virtual class – or courtroom – then evaluating each other in order to improve their delivery, methods, and persuasive techniques.
